Boarding m/s Paul Gauguin in Papeete, Tahiti, felt like stepping into a dreamscape. As we set sail, the rhythm of the waves became the perfect soundtrack to our Polynesian adventure. The ship itself, with its relaxed, international atmosphere, felt like a floating sanctuary – thoughtfully designed for sailing in the shallow, crystalline waters of the Pacific.

Our first day at sea offered a chance to settle into the serene pace of life aboard. I wandered the decks, indulged in a spa treatment, and enjoyed the views from the upper deck. Evenings were filled with lively shows, enriching talks, and, of course, sharing stories with fellow travellers over dinner.

Waking up to the turquoise embrace of Fakarava was like opening my eyes to a watercolour painting. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Tuamotu Islands stunned me with its endless lagoon and pristine beaches. Exploring the atoll, I marvelled at the vibrant marine life and the rare bird species that call this paradise home.

After another restful day at sea, I found myself in Omoa on Fatu Hiva, a peaceful village that felt timeless. Walking through the narrow streets, I visited the Maison Grelet museum, where intricate wooden carvings revealed the island’s artistic heritage.

Local artisans demonstrated the creation of tapa – a beautiful bark cloth. We embraced the art of making umu hei, a fragrant bouquet garni, fragrance of which filled the air with freshness.

Next, we reached Atuona on Hiva Oa, an island that seemed to resonate with the creative spirit of its inhabitants. Visiting the tombs of Jacques Brel and Paul Gauguin, I felt a deep connection to the artistic soul of this place.

The cultural centre offered a glimpse into Gauguin’s world, and the surrounding landscapes with their rugged charm and black sand beaches truly felt like a painter’s muse.
Hapatoni on Tahuata Island greeted us with traditional singing and dancing. The villagers known for their warmth and craftsmanship showed us their intricate bone and wood carvings making this small community feel like the heart of the Marquesas.

One of the most awe-inspiring moments of the journey came at Taiohae on Nuku Hiva Island. Climbing to the summit of Mount Muake, the panoramic view of rocky islands framed by lush valleys and black sandy beaches was breathtakingly remarking. Exploring further, the ancient tikis at Piki Vehine reminded me of the island’s deep-rooted traditions.

After two tranquil days at sea we arrived at Huahine. The wild, unspoilt beauty of this island was captivating. I explored both Grande Huahine and Petite Huahine, marvelling at the archaeological remnants and the warm hospitality of the locals in Fare.

Bora Bora was the definition of paradise. Its white sandy beaches and the dramatic silhouette of Mount Otemanu was speechless. I couldn’t resist a snorkelling adventure in the famous lagoon, swimming among technicolour fish that darted through the pristine waters.
Motu Mahana, a private paradise on Taha’a Island, was the highlight of relaxation. A traditional Polynesian barbecue on the beach surrounded by endless shades of turquoise made me feel as though I had found the ultimate escape.

The final stop, Moorea, was a postcard come to life. The lush pineapple plantations and the view from the Belvedere over Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay etched themselves into my memory. I couldn’t help but reflect on how the journey had taken me not just across islands, but through stories, cultures, and a way of life that felt both ancient and welcoming.

Returning to Papeete, it felt transformational. The voyage had given me a deeper appreciation of Polynesia’s wild beauty and its generous spirit. As I disembarked, I knew I was leaving a part of my heart among the islands, carrying with me the stories, the songs, and the memories of this enchanting cruise on board m/s Paul Gauguin.
